I had two friends over and we watched ASJ--which made me all happy. I got to show off my shiny new DVDs. I had only watched part of The Day they Hanged Kid Curry, hadn't even looked over the other discs.
Imagine my surprise when I read the episode description for The Biggest Game in the West. Anyone who already has season 2 and 3 notice this?

answer under the cut~~

It says (this is directly off the back of the second disc case) "Pete Duel tragically lost his life, and Roger David stepped in to take his place as Kid Curry.'

HUH? Okay--I guess they were trying to be discrete about how Pete Duel died, but get a fact checker Timeless Media Group, he played Heyes...

And yes, I know these shots are from Smiler with a Gun, but I wanted pictures of all three of them together. I have no real love for Roger Davis, but I do think the DVDs dis him just a little. There is one teeny, tiny picture of him on the back of the entire set. On the case that contains all episodes he was in, Pete Duel is on the cover.

Anyway--we watched Bounty Hunter (Lou Gosset love) and McCreedy Bust: Going, going, gone (Kid doing a jig and Heyes worried about him...) I am brimming over with love for Kid and Heyes.

I noticed the mistake regarding Roger Davis/Kid Curry as well. I thought that was rather low, not to do any research or proof read your work, but I'm so happy to just have the dvd I'm willing to overlook it. And yeah, I was saying just the other night after starting Season 3 that Roger Davis wasn't getting much love from the dvd maker...Pete's image is all over everything and there's nothing of Davis. Not that I have a lot of Davis love, but I do feel rather sorry for him.

OMG, Bounty Hunter. What an excellent episode. We couldn't even snark it.

David had such a hard job stepping in, so I feel badly for him as well. It certainly wasn't his fault. He's a working guy and he needed a job at the time, so he did the best he could. It's very hard to replace a character that people love as we know. It rarely works unless the approach is handled extremely well.

Well it wasn't his fault anyways. The stupid writers/producers should have handled it better! They could have written Heyes out of the show (still would have sucked though) and created a new character instead of putting someone into the role as if nothing had happened. And someone who looks NOTHING like Pete Duel, for that matter.

I think the cleverest transition from one actor to another was in Due South. And surprisingly, the second "Ray" ended up being a more popular character than the first "Ray". It was definitely the producers or whoever made that decision that made a bad one as far as a lot of fans were and still are concerned, not because of Davis of course. And if the actor had left because of other reasons, it might have worked. But this was so sad, it tainted the role for anybody else. An entire new character was the only way to go.

Very true. And didn't they resume filming the day after they found Pete's body? How awful for Ben if that is true. :(

There was a big discussion on another board of all the errors Timeless Media made in its descriptions of the Season 2 and 3 episodes, including the one about Roger's character. Personally, I think it's inexcusable and it shows to me that Universal didn't really care about the show because it if had, they would certainly have had someone who was familiar with it proofread the text and also would have caught the error on the box that states NBC produced ASJ.

I agree that a lot of companies don't care. When The Sentinel first season came out, the creators weren't even asked about any input since they no longer owned the rights. They even told me personally that they would have done commentaries or interviews but Universal didn't ask. In fact, Bilson and DeMeo only found out set one was coming out because somebody who knew them was designing the DVD cover and told them. So it's not just one company, but a lot of them just crank out product with not much thought at all.
