.. that I'd like to ask a favor, without any expectations. If anyone has a moment and is willing, would they please glance at my LJ, at the two latest posts, and be so kind as to comment on which font is more legible and comfortable to read (behind the cut there's some story text). I have this thing where I prefer a certain format and font, but at the same time I don't want to make readers' eyes bleed, so feedback would be most appreciated. (If both fonts suck, please feel very free to say so - I won't take it personally. I want my stories to be easy to read).

Thanks to anyone who can be bothered, and if this is too far afield from the comm's rules, my apologies and I'll delete as ordered. :-)

I don't see any difference between them. They both look like a typical serif font (Times New Roman or something like that). What fonts are you using? Is it possible that some people (me, for instance) might not have them loaded on their computers? If that's the case, it'll just display with a default font.

It's entirely possible that it's not a common font (it's Apple Garamond). One is simply a lighter version of the other. I like them and want to use them to post fics, but only if they're comfortable to the reader. Do you find them comfortable to view?

BTW, I don't have "Apple Garamond" but I do have something just called "Garamond". Is that the same thing?

I think mine is just a variant (or it would just be called Garamond) - although it can't be a mac font because I don't use a mac. :) I suspect it's very similar to regular Garamond.

They were comfortable to view, both of them. Rather large. I could not tell much if any difference in them - maybe the 2nd one was lighter? On my PC it's a san serif font, not a serif.

Ooh, interesting. See, that helps, because to me they're a comfortable size, and the last time I did this sort of thing, a lot of other people found them large. I'll see if I can reduce when I actually post. Thanks!

My personal preference is that I don't like it when people mess with the font/size/color. I prefer the standard font/size/color for everything. It annoys me when I have to change the size bigger if people use little size fonts (or smaller if people use big size fonts). I'm always having to use "?style=mine" or even going so far as to set my browser to page style = none or set it to use my colors only, so that I can read the text with all the strange fonts and colors people define. I prefer everything to be standard and plain and let each reader's own preferences on their own browser set things as they prefer them.

(just my humble opinion, no intent to offend anybody)

No offense whatsoever - that's why I asked! I tend to agree on color, because black's just easiest, but I know a lot of people (old people like me, mostly *g*) get tired eyes if the type's too small. Also, isn't what's standard different for every browser/etc? But if I set it at my preference ... does style=mine fix that for you so it's your preference? Because of course any one person can't set it so everyone's happy (I've definitely noticed that), but as a writer one wants to at least not hurt people's eyes.

And, specifically, did you find my font illegible, or just annoying? :-)

I'm like malnpudl and I don't have your font on my system, so it displayed using my default font. The text was large, however, and I'd reduce the size if I was reading a story at that size.

Thanks! This is immensely helpful. You're confirming that what looks OK to me on my browser is a bit big for others, so I'll reduce the pointsize when I post complete fic.

Thanks! No, there's not much difference - one's a light version of the other. I'm learning from this feedback that smaller and lighter (smaller and lighter, probably, than I would find ideal) is sounding like the way to go. This helps!

I could not see any difference in the fonts either. It was very comfortable. I read half the story in one and the other half in the other. It was nice. Large enough, but not ridiculously large. I think you have a winner.

Thanks. :) I'll probably stick with this font, but go a point or so smaller, when I post the whole fic (which I hope will be soonish). This is way helpful to me. I like what I like, of course, but within those parameters I want readers to also be comfortable.

Just keep it simple. No ostentatious fonts and avoid using colors.

Good to hear. Some of these folks get out of control with their font selections. Not necessarily with posting fic, but in their journals. When it is such an effort to read it, I just have to pass.
