Drabble for Travel Big Bang
Jun. 29th, 2011 10:52 amTitle: How Did We Get Here
For: Big Bang - Stories should be focused on a journey/trip/etc. It doesn’t have to be a ride from place A to place B. It can be as well a journey through time (memories, diaries, time traveling, etc) or any other type of traveling you can imagine.
Summary: Heyes always did think too much....
..
How did we get here? Heyes pondered. It wasn’t like he and the Kid planned their lives to end up this way, always on the run, never able to have a normal life. Heyes shifted on his bedroll trying to get more comfortable on the hard desert ground. The sky above him was vast and open. Beautiful. With all that happened in his life that had never changed. No matter where they went, how far they traveled, the sky was his constant. He could count on its wonder to clear his troubled thoughts.
Another town, always just passing through. Sometimes slowing down but never stopping. Most people sought the comfort of a familiar face, not so for them. They were glad for the faces of strangers. Heyes turned his head. Not more than five feet away the Kid was sleeping, his breath coming in light snores. He smiled to himself. The only other constant in his life besides the sky.
How did we get here? Heyes tucked his arms under the back of his head. They had traveled so far in such a short amount of time, neither of them even thirty yet. They had gone from being farmer’s sons to notorious outlaws in what seemed to be the space of a heartbeat. So why did it feel like he’d been running forever? He was just so tired.
The first time they ran was when the raiders had come, burning and killing, not caring that these were innocent families. He still remembered his father yelling to him to take Jed and run. Run fast, run far. So scared.
The second time they had to run, it was from the orphanage. He just couldn’t bear to watch the light fade from the Kid’s eyes little by little, day by day. Heyes sighed softly. They’d been in motion ever since.
Miles and miles, from one end of the country to the other, saddle worn and weathered they traveled until one day there would be no place left for them to run. Heyes only hoped that if he somehow managed to survive, he turned to the Kid, that if they managed to survive, he’d at least be able to see the sky sometimes.
